Alpine Ore

An archaeological quest in the Montafon

To mark the 20th anniversary of archaeological research in the Montafon, a visually stunning documentary on the mining history of Vorarlberg's southernmost valley was made in 2019.

Historical background

The origins go far back

Gorgeous churches and precious crosses document the golden age of mining during the Middle Ages in the Montafon. However, its origins apparently go back even further and the small mining district is one of the oldest in the Alps. According to interdisciplinary archaeological research by the Goethe University in Frankfurt on the Main, this goes back through the Middle Ages to prehistoric times, or at least to Celtic times.

Documentary on the mining history of the Montafon

by Rüdiger Krause

Directed by the television director and film producer Peter Prestel, known from numerous Terra X films and historical documentaries, a documentary on the mining history of the Montafon was the result of a close cooperation between the Goethe University Frankfurt, the Montafon Tourism Office, Montafon TV and the municipality of Bartholomäberg. The film takes a close look at the golden age of mining in the Montafon during the Middle Ages. Filming took place on the Kristberg and Bartholomäberg, focusing on the mining archaeological excavations of the Goethe University in Frankfurt as well as the miners' church on the Kristberg and the magnificent Bartholomäberg church with its famous Romanesque cross, which was filmed in the original. The idea for the film came from the book Montafoner Zeitmaschine by Rüdiger Krause, published in 2015.
